Experts have suggested that shorter interval Schwartz Round-like interventions could improve HCW mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic 32, 33. Nevertheless, these initiatives offer innovative tools that allow for broader dissemination of mental health support. More data is necessary to evaluate the efficacy of these mental health focused mobile health apps. In Spain, administrators are assessing the efficacy of an app for HCW, which focuses on CBT and mindfulness techniques and includes content on emotional skills, lifestyle behavior, work stress and burnout, social support, and practical tools.

On average, fewer than 5% of participants had more than 10% missing data on any of the key variables. The first three waves were excluded because coping behavior questions were not available. For the present analyses, data from 26 waves were used, specifically from April 2020 (Wave 4) through June 2021 (Wave 29). Prior work has shown that access to resources can influence the adoption of certain coping behaviors e.g.,11,12. Moss and Holahan thus proposed an integrative view in which coping encompasses both adaptive, momentary responses and enduring, habitual tendencies. We further add year, week-of-year and day-of-week indicators, summarized in the vector Θt, interacted with the helpline fixed effects, to account for secular trends and for seasonal and day-of-week effects. The model includes the helpline indicator ξh to account for time-invariant differences among helplines. 2, we restrict the sample to calls recorded for the time from 1 January 2019 through 30 June 2020, where information on sex and age group of callers is available. The same logic applies to the group of callers older than 60, and the middle category in some cases includes also individuals whose age is slightly below 30 years or above 60. To investigate changes in conversation topics (Fig. 2), we focus on the call-level data and combine information from 12 helplines (Extended Data Table 1a) for which we have information on conversation topics and inferred caller characteristics.

Many services were closed intermittently or considerably reduced while telepsychiatric services were extensively expanded. This is because the process for registering these kinds of deaths takes substantially more time than deaths from natural causes. This means 95% of people are receiving treatment within 18 weeks. The NHS has managed to ensure that those people who have been referred for talking therapies have been able to receive the treatment within target. There has been a sharp increase in referrals since then, but the increases have not been matched with similar increases in children actually accessing the services.
