Usually, anyone who was paid $600 or more in non-employment income should receive a 1099. However, there are many types of 1099s for different situations.

  1. For Forms 1099-SA and 5498-SA only, if due to a low volume of recipients, you are filing the form(s) on paper, you can send in the black-and-white Copy(ies) A with a Form 1096 that you also printed from the IRS website.
  2. Box 3 contains distribution codes that describe the type of distribution being reported.
  3. The distribution may have been paid directly to a medical service provider or to the account holder.
  4. There is quite a few different scenarios that can occur at the death of an HSA account beneficiary.

So each HSA can reach its maximum potential with minimal headache. Inheriting an HSA can be a welcomed event but there are a few nuances to these accounts once the account-holder dies.

A 1099-R is issued if a taxpayer received a distribution or payout from a pension, retirement plan, or individual retirement account (IRA). Also, certain annuities and life insurance contracts may issue a 1099-R. However, not all retirement distributions are taxable, and a tax professional should be consulted if you’re unsure whether you should pay taxes on a distribution.

What Is IRS 1099-SA Form: Reporting HSA and MSA Distributions

For example, the account beneficiary reasonably, but mistakenly, believed that an expense was a qualified medical expense and was reimbursed for that expense from the HSA. The account beneficiary then repays the mistaken distribution to the HSA. The 1099-SA is an important form when you report distributions from special accounts to pay medical expenses. The form contains specific information that must be reported correctly and may or may not mean you owe additional taxes.

Now let’s look at the different kinds of 1099 forms you might receive and how they differ from one another. There are several different types of 1099 forms, so we’ll break them down for you below, but first let’s talk about the basics. In 2011 the requirement was extended by the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010 to payments made by persons who receive income from rental property. There is quite a few different scenarios that can occur at the death of an HSA account beneficiary.

Check the box to indicate if this account is an HSA, Archer MSA, or MA MSA. If the designated beneficiary is not the spouse or there is no designated beneficiary, the account ceases to be an HSA, Archer MSA, or MA MSA. You must report the receipt of a rollover from one Archer MSA to another Archer MSA, and receipt of a rollover 1099-sa from an Archer MSA or an HSA to an HSA in box 4. For HSA or Archer MSA contributions made between January 1, 2024, and April 15, 2024, you should obtain the participant’s designation of the year for which the contributions are made. Check the box to indicate if this distribution was from an HSA, Archer MSA, or MA MSA.

Indeed, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) matches nearly all 1099s and W-2 forms (the wage-report forms from your employer) against your Form 1040 tax returns or other tax forms. If they don’t match, the IRS may tell you that you owe more money. For a variety of reasons some Form 1099 reports may include amounts that are not actually taxable to the payee.

Common Tax Deductions for Small-Business Owners

If you took money from your HSA, watch the mail for IRS Form https://turbo-tax.org/. The codes could reflect a tax-free distribution or owing more than you planned for. Either way, you won’t be able to file without having it handy. So, if you’ve only taken normal distributions that were used to pay for qualified medical expenses from your own account, you’ll receive one 1099-SA.

As a result, it’s important to update your address directly with payers. A 1099-S is issued to taxpayers for real estate transactions if they had closed a sale or an exchange during the tax year. Some examples of real estate transactions could be realizing gains or proceeds from the sale of land, commercial and industrial buildings, and residential properties, such as a home or condominium. A form 1099-K is sent by payment companies, online marketplaces, or payment apps for goods or services they provide during the year. For 2023, the $600 threshold is delayed the companies to report payments on 1099-Ks and a $5,000 threshold is planned for 2024.

If you are self-employed, you can’t contribute more than your net self-employment income. This is your income from self-employment minus expenses (including the deductible part of self-employment tax as calculated on Schedule SE of your tax return). You or your employer can make tax-free contributions of up to 75% of the annual deductible of your high deductible health plan (HDHP) to your Archer MSA. If you have a self-only plan, your contribution limit is 65% of the deductible. Only certain individuals are eligible to contribute to an HSA or MSA.

Also, seek tax help if you’re a taxpayer with questions about your non-employment income or how to report that income properly to the IRS. For example, if a taxpayer does not receive a 1099-R (for distributions from pensions and retirement plans) and contacting the payer has not resolved the issue, the IRS suggests you contact them. The IRS will, in turn, contact the payer or employer on your behalf. What do you do when you get a 1099-MISC on Jan. 31 that reports $8,000 worth of income when you only got paid $800 from the company?

For example, if $1000 is mistakenly distributed from your HSA, and you had $0 spending on HSA’s this year, Line 16 of Form 8889 will show a positive $1000 which will be taxed and penalized. This is because without a qualified medical expense to offset it, the distribution is treated as a non qualified distribution. Instead, you can inform your HSA custodian before April 15th of the following year, and pay the distribution back. This might occur if you thought an expense was qualified but is not.

IRS Form 4562 Instructions

If you are employed, your employer can make tax-free contributions as well. Enter rollover contributions to the HSA or Archer MSA received by you during 2023. However, you must file Form 5498-SA with the IRS by May 31, 2024, to report the December 31, 2023, FMV of the account. If a regular contribution is made to the HSA that is closed, and a distribution is made to the participant, enter the gross distribution in box 1. If earnings are distributed, enter the amount of earnings in box 2. Employer-Sponsored Plans are not individually owned and amounts available under the Employer-Sponsored Plan are not FDIC insured.
